a crashing wave rolls into paris as pharrell turns louis vuitton’s runway into a coastline

pharrell stages louis vuitton’s show as artificial coastline

For Louis Vuitton’s Spring-Summer 2027 menswear presentation in Paris, Pharrell Williams turns the runway into a constructed seascape centered around a monumental cascading wave. Installed as the backdrop for the show, the large-scale water feature, designed by Bureau Betak, frames a collection that draws on surf culture, positioning the beach as what the brand describes as a ‘space of universal human belonging.’ The scenography extends Williams’ ongoing interest in travel, leisure, and coastal identities, translating these themes into an immersive environment.

The installation creates the impression of an endless breaking wave, with water flowing continuously over a curved structure and surrounding a sandy pathway that leads beneath the cascade. Models move through the landscape carrying Louis Vuitton’s signature luggage and accessories, bringing forward the longstanding association between the house and travel while reimagining it through the lens of surfing and shoreline culture.

water installation connects fashion & environmental messaging

Beyond its visual impact, the set functions as part of Louis Vuitton’s broader sustainability narrative. According to the brand, the project aligns with its Regeneration 2030 roadmap and highlights its support of Coral Gardeners, the French Polynesian organization focused on coral reef restoration. Water used for the installation was supplied by Eaux de Paris and circulated through a closed-loop system before returning to the municipal network after the event.

The artificial beach also extends beyond the duration of the show. Louis Vuitton states that the sand used for the installation will be donated to the beach volleyball courts at the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris, reducing material waste associated with temporary fashion-event infrastructure.

The scenography abstracts familiar coastal elements into a controlled environment. The curved opening carved into the waterfall creates a cave-like threshold, while the reflective surfaces and engineered water curtain blur distinctions between landscape, stage design, and installation art.

surfing culture informs the spring-summer 2027 collection

The collection translates surfing references into tailored menswear. Technical fabrics, relaxed silhouettes, caps, outerwear, and travel bags reinterpret elements associated with coastal lifestyles through the framework of Louis Vuitton’s contemporary dandy aesthetic in a collection that positions the surfer as a global traveler moving between leisure, luxury, and urban life.

Louis Vuitton’s wave installation demonstrates how temporary architecture can communicate brand storytelling and environmental messaging at once. Whether read as spectacle, stage design, or experiential installation, the project places the ocean at the center of the conversation, transforming a fashion show into a constructed encounter with one of the planet’s most symbolic landscapes.
