sipario collection has been designed by cristina celestino for durame, a wooden products brand from cantù, italy. the set of furniture honors two of the main characters on the scenic architecture for theatre among the traditional italian excellences: the cabinet-making and the passementerie. as the biggest theatres in the world were decorated with curtains weaved by italian looms, in the same way the ‘sipario collection’ carries on the stage storage units full of citations. sipario symbolizes in terms of design the ‘mise-en-scene’ of the atmosphere that reigns on the stage in the historic theatres. the motivation for the project comes from a study of the italian-style theatres: wooden emiciclo, perspectival backstages and deep stage.

the upper structure is made of wood while the base is covered by fringes 

the cabinet is made of two different volumes were the various materials interact with each other: the top volume is like a scenic box made entirely of wood, multifaceted in the corners and very rigid, with a light and colored passementeries that serve as the base. the outcome is a contrast between what we consider light and heavy and matt and silky. the tripolino fringes, which cover the base, can be moved by a simple gesture, discovering a storage space. the upper part, that is in oak wood or canaletto walnut, is an austere and material shell, but still sophisticated, cutted like a diamond. the shutters with a push-open mechanism bring to a storage room that is adorned by a mirror on the backdrop and a glass shelf.
