on the occasion of design miami/ 13, the carpenters workshop gallery has presented ‘monkey business’ by studio job. the shimmering sculpture sees a brilliant, swarovski crystal covered monkey straddling a polished and gilded bronze trunk. hand painted aluminium details on the creature’s face reads an expression of surprise, while a small red hat fitted with a golden tassel is mounted on his head. the show animal is bathed in expensive jewels and lavishly ornamented materials, guarding the ornate chest with resolve. the object’s namesake alludes to a questionable, potentially illegal activity asking whether the dazzling mammal is shielding his own treasures, or if they are not even his at all.
