the ‘tønder collection’ by swedish designer david ericsson was conceived in celebration of the 100th anniversary of hans j. wegner, along with one designer from each of the nordic countries. participating in the ‘hans wegner a nordic design icon from tønder’ exhibition at the tønder art museum, the series is also named after his hometown. the wooden furniture pieces –  ‘the whale cabinet’ and ‘the writing desk’ were built by cabinet maker martin altwegg for friends of wood, a swedish producer.

‘hans j. wegner worked both with objects that are produced in a large scale and in a kind of limited edition with very skilled craftsmen. the tønder collection is also a material investigation, to give some new material values to wood, booth physical and philosophical values.’

the ‘tønder collection’ will be exhibited at the tønder art museum from the 5th of april – 2th of november 2014.

‘the whale cabinet’ features hand painted whales on a cotton aquarelle-paper 640g that have been done by david ericsson. the paper itself is almost self-supporting and very strong, creating an unexpected feeling, as it is very sturdy and fragile at the same time. the unit is constructed from birch wood, 8mm glass planes and brass hinges.

‘the writing desk’ has a copper fabric as a tabletop to give it a sense of warmth and shine. the drawers have a place for pencils, rulers, papers and folders to be put on a surface of vegetable-tanned leather. oak wood and birch wood were also used for its construction.
