‘ICARUS’ by david trubridge on display at pompidou centre

the pompidou centre in paris has purchased three large pieces by new zealand designer david trubridge for its permanent collection. this marks the first time that an internationally renowned museum has acquired works which focus on sustainable development.

the three lighting sculptures create the installation entitled ‘ICARUS’, based on the greek legend of icarus’ wings of wax and feather melting as he few too close to the sun. the two luminous polycarbonate wing lights circle around sola, a patterned wooden sphere colored orange inside. the design serves as a moral story, reminding the viewer not to get carried away with technology.

first shown at milan design week 2010, this and other installations were transported as hand luggage, showing its compact possibilities. each complex form it cut using computer modelling and sheet materials, after which it is flat-packed, reducing the pendant to 1/40th of its size before it is shipped.
