designers rethink the skateboard with new york city as an inspiration

designer skateboards are not exactly a new concept, but seldom are they as funky as this collection by creative innovators in the design industry. decksXdesign — presented as part of NYCxDESIGN 2018 — was commissioned by award winning design firm frog and features boards from sources as polar as quirky designer karim rashid to bike sharing platform citibike. needless to say, the collection is eccentric and out of the box.

all the designs presented for deckxdesign and commissioned by frog place less emphasis on function, and more on ideas. one of the most surprising designs is citibike’s board — aka ‘city board’ — which was constructed of an actual citibike frame. the cool little blue skateboard captures the bike’s signature sweeping curves. like the bike from which it originates, the board has two lights: one up front and another in back. others are more functional and less sculptural, but still offer a creative slant. all proceeds from the silent auction of the boards went to art start, a non-profit that brings the creative arts to and homeless youth.
