inspiring installations and conversations

A series of special projects – from sought-after brand collaborations to experiential installations – welcome visitors to Design London 2022, quite literally. Enhancing the positive effects of color, Lois O’Hara creates a vibrant, inspiring one-off mural to greet guests at the front entrance of Magazine London. The Brighton-based multidisciplinary artist has also fabricated the talks theater where conversations between creatives are set to take place. Called Discussions at Design London, speakers include Lee Broom, Sabine Marcelis, Jay Blades and Marco Oggian. The materials for 2021’s talks theater, designed by Yinka Ilori, have been reclaimed and rebuilt for the Champagne bar.

Material technology manufacturer Versarien teams up with British artist and designer Steuart Padwick for an eco-conscious 3D-printed installation. Called Island Steps, the setting acts as a playful yet social oasis for fair goers. It is made from 100% cement-free concrete reinforced with Graphene, which is expected to reduce its carbon footprint by over 70%.

international design curations

The design fair hosts a community of international pavilions that each showcase a curation of design work from a specific country. The South Korean pavilion creates a home for some of the nation’s best small- to medium-sized design companies. Products, ranging from ceramics and furniture to home accessories and kitchenware, are set to amaze visitors. The pavilion is supported by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, and the Korea Federation of SMEs.

The Portuguese pavilion hosts 13 leading brands whose portfolio of products are 100% designed and manufactured in the country. Designs might vary in size and scope but the material types stay timber. The concept follows the mission of the Portuguese Association of Wood and Furniture Industries (AIMMP): to represent, promote and protect Portuguese companies from five divisions that make up the wood and furniture sector.

12 sustainable furniture and home decoration brands from Thailand have been selected to represent the South Asian country’s pavilion. With the Department of International Trade Promotion of the Royal Thai Government launching the ‘Thailand Be the ChanGe’ initiative, the exhibition highlights some of the nation’s most forward-thinking creative businesses. The curation comprises homeware, furniture and lifestyle pieces that display a fusion of craft and innovation, reuse of natural and industrial waste, and meet the rising global demand for eco-conscious items.

The Denmark pavilion explores the ever-popular trends of scandi design. The curation by Lifestyle and Design Cluster pairs beloved brands with new companies and creatives, in conjunction with the Danish Embassy. The display aims to promote innovation and sustainable growth for SMEs in the design industries.
