istanbul is 2010 european capital of culture.

with the aim of underlining the importance of design for production, economy, cultural interaction and quality of life, istanbul will host the first international design biennial in 2012. one of the pre-events is an international design symposium, organized by istanbul foundation for culture and arts (IKSV). the title of the symposium is ‘why design, why biennial?’. it will take place at kadir has university, cibali campus, on december 2-3, 2010.

designboom will participate in this international design symposium and will give a presentation on our most recent cultural production. if you are in town on friday, december 3, 2010, don’t miss the event. designboom is scheduled for the closing speech at 5.00 – 5.30 pm.

the symposium aims to create means for a productive debate on the interaction of design and diverse fields such as environment, culture, politics, economy, education, technology, and science. with presentations of leading figures from various sectors, coming from turkey and abroad, the issue of design and the city will also be elaborated with a specific focus on istanbul. within this framework, the symposium is structured around four main thematic parts: design and its genetics, design and its micro-components, design and its macro-components, design and the city.

with speakers from turkey and abroad, from institutions such as design business association, design management institute, designboom, zona tortona, design museum in london, and material connexion, as well as prominent figures of design in turkey from both the academia and the practical field, the symposium invites you to a two-day gathering of design and everything that it is connected to.

the istanbul foundation for culture and arts is expanding its activities in the field of design with a series of events that will culminate in the launch of the first international istanbul design biennial in 2012.

turkey’s growing role as an economic, political and cultural center has highlighted the importance of innovation and design and spurred the development of creative industries, particularly in the multicultural metropolis of istanbul. one of the biennial’s primary objectives, therefore, is to celebrate this creative potential and share it with international audiences; in belief that the diverse viewpoints and distinctive design discourse of istanbul will enrich the global design culture.

istanbul design biennial october 13th – december 12th, 2012 with the aim of underlining the importance of design for production, economy, cultural interaction and quality of life, the first istanbul design biennial will be realized in 2012 by istanbul foundation for culture and arts. istanbul design biennial will be open to all disciplines of the creative industries in major fields such as urban design, architecture, interior design, industrial design, graphic design, new media design and fashion design, as well as their subfields.
