what are designboom marts?

the designboom mart is a unique interactive platform for emerging and established designers to test their new ideas. over the intense days of exhibiting and socializing, the designers have the chance to personally discuss their work with customers, manufacturers, retailers, press and museum curators other like-minded professionals from different cultural backgrounds, verifying their designs and their packaging credentials. visitors can buy self-produced or limited edition pieces directly from the designers. profits through sales can be used towards partially covering any travel costs.

over the years, many talents have been discovered and gone on to become industry celebrities. after new york, tokyo, sydney, seoul, melbourne, stockholm, saint-etienne, valencia, copenhagen, … this unique formula now sees its 29th edition, since our very first mart in new york in 2005.

  • Dear,

I would like you to get to know C-mine in Genk, Belgium.

C-mine is a center of creativity located on the old industrial grounds of the mining industrie of the region. In the shadow of the old slag heap several beautifull restored factory buildings have given a new function. The inner square is spacious, has a ruin and 2 mineshafts (one is the largest of Belgium). C-mine is located near a station, the highway and 3km from the city center. The old metal warehouse on the site is now the studio of Pieter Stockmans: international appreciated artist in ceramics. There is also a large exhition space on the first floor of that building.
The energybuildings, located at the heart of the site, are the new cultural soul of Genk; there is a designcenter where we organise projects and exhibitions, a cultural center with two stages, the main auditorium and a smaller one, a foyer and several large spaces that are suited for fairs etc. We have ‘C-mine Cribb’; an organisation that provides spaces and support for beginning creative entrepeneurs. C-mine Expedition, not a conventional mining-museum but an exploration for the senses undergroung is worth visiting. (new sinds this summer).
Several conference rooms, 3 restaurants, and a lot of parkingspace, a movie theatre, a gym, an indoor kids-playground, …
The old machinery in the buildings has been restored, as so are the old tiles on floors and walls; it creates a unique atmosphere…On the site a new building (price winning architecture!) has risen: the Media, Arts & Design faculty. Nearby there is a multicultural quarter, with restaurants and multi-culti shops.

Why I’m I telling you this in ‘my best’ English? Our dream is to house designboom mart!
C-mine site is supported by the city of Genk (I’m also working for the city) and has good contacts with the governement of Flanders and the organisations that occupies with design like ‘Designflanders’.
Recently we where confronted with the shut-down of the Ford-automobile factory in Genk. Again a big stimulance for the regional governement to support C-mine in her project to promote creativity and creative bussiness.
There are a lot of possibilities. Please consider this and let me know if you are interested.
    Ps: sorry for my English.

    Best regards,
    Eveline Borgermans
