what if a lamp helped us be aware of the value of light, energy, and money? dina, a lamp designed by colombian MOAK studio, needs money to activate — coins are the ones who transmit power to let it shine. it is more than just a lamp, it is a different way to light up our consciousness.

when the coin is inserted, the electrical circuit is activated and the bulbs light up, yet not all coins can turn it on. to stand out the concept of the value of light, it only works with large and medium size coins, which usually represent the highest denomination in most currencies. small ones do not manage to make the necessary contact to turn on the light.

when we want dina to stop illuminating, we simply pull the wooden sphere and our coin is saved. not only it reminds us of the value of light, but we can also save money for future wishes.

since dina is a conceptual but functional prototype, the body and shade of this first produced unit are 3D printed and the top and bottom lids are made of natural ash wood. in its interior, it has a mechanism that holds coins in order to turn on the light by closing the electrical circuit.

this product is part of a conceptual collection together with other two products, in which MOAK studio wants to emphasize the multiple physical interactions we have forgotten in this digital era. the designers want to come closer to objects to understand how they work and how we, as humans, can interact back with them.

the ‘interaction collection’ will be shown at the promote design DIN exhibition, at lambrate design district during the milan design week 2018.
