donald trump unveils new space force logo that looks like star trek insignia

president donald trump officially unveiled the logo for the US space force, with reactions among star trek fans drawing attention to its familiarity. it’s because the logo, which draws from an existing air force command logo, bears a striking similarity to ‘star trek’ insignia.

space force is a newly developed branch of the armed forces that prepares for or conducts space warfare. as of december 2019, the US congress authorized its creation, passing a $738 billion military bill that created the sixth branch of the military.

now the air force is responsible for branding, uniform design, and the various other requirements involved with creating a new armed force. the service’s new uniform nametapes were revealed last week, as well as the swearing in of gen. john W. raymond as chief of space operations, ahead of the logo’s unveiling on friday (25 january, 2019).

over the weekend, users (including former star trek cast member george takei) were quick to point out the new logo’s similarities to the arrow-like ‘star trek’ insignia. ‘ahem. we are expecting some royalties from this,’ he tweeted on friday afternoon.

in 2018, the trump make america great again committee polled voters on their preferred space force logo. several of those options features nasa-inspired iconography, but none of them resemble the final logo.

an official spokesperson said in a statement that the seal unveiled by trump is, in fact, the new official logo: ‘the US space force seal honors the department of the air force’s proud history and long-standing record of providing the best space capabilities in the world,’ it reads.

‘the delta symbol, the central design element in the seal, was first used as early as 1942 by the US army air forces; and was used in early air force space organization emblems dating back to 1961. since then, the delta symbol has been a prominent feature in military space community emblems.’
