at salone del mobile during milan design week 2012, london-based studio doshi levien (nipa doshi and jonathan levien) is exhibiting ‘chandlo’ for BD barcelona design. referring to the bindi worn by indian women on their forehead, the vanity is a composition of elements based on the ritual of dressing and grooming oneself. the unit is comprised of a central, front faced mirror with a red steel frame, a side mirror with a rose colored filter and a plywood jewelry box with rosewood veneer, all structured on a solid ash surface. due to the placement of the forms and the geometric pattern on the back of the circular reflective surface, the dressing table can be viewed from any angle.

continuing the linear pattern found on the reverse side of the mirror, the stool is upholstered in dark grey with an aluminum colored grid. the plywood and steel chair is constructed with an interior mechanism allowing it to swivel.

the geometric forms and colors are a reflection of the bauhaus movement and the ideas behind de stijl, including works by hans richter, max buchartz, theo van doesburg and el lissitzky.
