Eames Institute to Offer Public Tours of New Bay Area Headquarters

The Eames Institute of Infinite Curiosity is unveiling its new gallery and collection space in the Bay Area, marking the first time the public can explore the extensive collection of Ray and Charles Eames. Located in Richmond, California, this refurbished venue will display a diverse range of materials, including over 40,000 artifacts such as mass-produced furniture designs, rare prototypes, products, tools, and personal belongings of the artistic duo. By bringing together items primarily sourced from the renowned Eames Office in Venice, CA, visitors will have the opportunity to delve into the lives and design process of the Eamesses. It’s such a pleasure to expand the reach of the Eames Institute and further share the Collection with even more people’,  says Llisa Demetrios, chief curator and granddaughter of Ray and Charles Eames. ‘The Eames Archives is so special to me because it holds the things my grandparents loved and cherished—it’s an absolute joy to finally be able to share these pieces in this way.’

stepping inside the World of Ray and Charles Eames

This consolidation presents fresh opportunities for curating and exhibiting these unique pieces. Since its founding in March 2022, the nonprofit Eames Institute has aimed to promote design engagement by preserving the legacy of Ray and Charles Eames through physical and digital means. Following the success of nine online exhibitions, this opening marks a pivotal moment for the institute, enhancing its ability to share the enduring impact of the Eameses directly with the public. The Richmond location will serve as a permanent venue for experiencing the Eames Collection firsthand, offering an expansive view of the duo’s work.

Among the notable items showcased are an Airplane Stabilizer (1943), reflecting Ray and Charles’ contribution to the development of prototype airplane parts for the US Navy, utilizing the innovative Eames Process to mold plywood into aerodynamic forms. Also on display is a Plywood Sculpture (1943), one of two remaining large-scale molded plywood sculptures by the duo, exhibited alongside renowned artworks at MoMA’s 15th anniversary exhibition. Another highlight is the Molded Plywood Seat (1942), an early prototype crafted using the Kazam! machine, a wooden device designed by Ray and Charles to mold plywood into intricate compound curves. Lastly, the Steinberg Diploma for Charles Eames (1950) is featured, a whimsical creation by artist Saul Steinberg, symbolizing Charles’ unconventional path in academia with a diploma rendered in humorous gibberish.
