‘variations on non-euclidean’ by Edgar Orlaineta & simon hamui

Exploring a fusion of sculpture, dance, and architecture, artist Edgar Orlaineta and designer Simon Hamui have given rise to a collection of furniture objects that celebrate contemporary aesthetics and the intricacies of the manufacturing process. The project titled Variations on Non-Euclidean comprises three pieces — the Ruth Lounge Chair, the Redshift Coffee Table, and the Miss Expanding Universe bookcase.

Each draws inspiration from the work of avant-garde dancer Ruth Page (1899-1991), her architecturally significant residence designer by Howard T. Fisher, and the sculptures crafted by Isamu Noguchi in homage to the dancer. The resulting pieces crafted primarily from wood sit in dialogue with the abstract and geometric mural enveloping La Tallera in Mexico.

The collaboration is an integral part of ‘Costal, mascara y palos’ by Edgar Orlaineta, the multidisciplinary exhibition hosted at La Tallera in the city of Cuernavaca, Morelos. Once the home-studio of artist David Alfaro Siqueiros, it now sits a public institution within the National Institute of Fine Arts.

Much like the multi-disciplinary synergy expressed in the creations of designers Edgar Orlaineta and Simon Hamui, the space of La Tallera melds with Siqueiros’ mural artistry adorning its exterior. The symmetrical designs of the furniture collection integrate into the ambient surroundings of La Tallera, embracing the architectural nuances and geometric intricacies of the building’s grand entrance.
