EDR design award 2021 showcases 22 finalists and winners

With an awards platform that rotates annually between three fields of design, the Edmond de Rothschild Design Award – also known as the EDR Design Award – promotes, encourages and supports emerging and established Israeli talents in contemporary art and design. The second edition rewarded finalists and winners of the 2021 product design field with an exhibition on show at the Shenkar gallery in Ramat Gam, Israel. The Edmond de Rothschild Foundation established the EDR Design Award with the aim of promoting and fostering the excellence of established as well as emerging designers in Israel through public recognition. By encouraging local creatives, the platform inspires local interest in contemporary design, which, in turn, increases international exposure of Israeli design. Entrants are supported with tools to promote their work, access to a professional network, and expert mentors with rich, on-going experience in the art and design industries. The award continues the Foundation’s philanthropic legacy of over 140 years, which was founded with the mission to advance excellence, diversity, and leadership through higher education and promote modern-day pioneers.

‘define: design’ exhibition at shenkar gallery

Titled, ‘Define: Design’, EDR Design Award showcases the 22 finalists and winners of its 2021 edition with an intimate, inspiring exhibition at Shenkar Gallery. The curation assembles 81 works from the portfolios of local Israeli designers in the field of product design. 2021 winners include Alex Padwa, senior lecturer and principle designer of the eponymous design studio; Naama Steinbock and Idan Friedman, designers and founders of Reddish studio; Gilli Kuchik and Ran Amitai, founders and designers of the self-titled studio; and Talia Mukmel, a multidisciplinary designer and creator. Side-by-side, the display exemplifies the different approaches and various mediums and methods practised in the field. Each project is accompanied by the designers, photographed in their studio space, and ready to give personal insight into their work, thought process, inspiration, motivation and more.

The exhibition arranges the work as a contextual, non-hierarchial landscape, where visitors can view work at their own will. Its design, both visual communication and spatial, was developed by two young designers who graduated Shenkar College – Ori Shifrin Anavi and Yael Amrami. The pair are former students of the professional development program of the Edmond de Rothschild Center, founded in 2020 in parallel to the EDR Design Award.
