edward van vliet uncovers hexagonal parquet series for bisazza

renowned for its glass mosaic designs, italian brand bisazza has recently unveiled its latest 2017 collection at the milan flagship store. this year, the company has focused on developing a distinct pre-finished wood parquet series in collaboration with dutch designers studio job, kiki van eijk and edward van vliet.

for the bisazza wood collection, edward van vliet has created laser-engraved patterns with bold hexagonal geometries and striking color hues. being part of the contemporary generation of dutch designers, vliet draws in creativity from natural and cultural varieties where materials, shapes, colors and patterns are explored and combined into unique designs or — as he describes it — into new worlds. ‘I specifically chose the hexagon as the basis for my designs because it gives three dimensional effects from every angle. the hexagon is a symbol of creation and revolution in all religions and cultures; it is connected to nature and for me it is a more organic shape, since is close to a circle’, expresses the designer.

looking further into vliet’s design approach, the study of geometries and their origins has long fascinated him — eventually becoming a main pillar in his works. from ancient arabic mathematics to zodiac signs, triangulation and the age of navigation by celestial objects, the designer extracts the essence from each field — translating them into a contemporary language with a sophisticated foundation of space, as seen in this parquet series. for the mosaic floors in brown, reddish and green colored nerved oak, vliet explains that ‘the geometric decoration of the spirograph and the star emphasise the different directions – it is reminiscent, in fact, of the wind rose that guides travelers all around the world’.
