on display at milan design week 2011 is ‘rien de 9’, a collection of limited edition pieces by amsterdam-based designer emmanuel babled. consisting of nine new objects, the exhibition features works that reinterpret the traditional approach and methods associated with murano glass. by inflating a form within the confines of the outer piece, it is able to slightly bulge between the constricting force allowing for unexpected forms.

‘seaform’, a series of watery-blue murano glass vases are composed of organic and bulbous forms. constrained by ropes of milky glass, the pieces appear to be in flux, dictated by the contrasting cords that seem to bind them. ranging from tall and thin to short and shapely, each vase is completely unique in size, color and orientation.

an assemblage of carrara marble and glass, ‘simbiosi’ for venini, features hand blown murano that is cradled a block of marble. marrying solid and translucent, hard and delicate materials, the pieces enforce a balance – both figuratively and literally – between the two components.
