emmanuelle moureaux crafts 1000 different colors for japanese auditorium seats

emmanuelle moureaux’s prominent color vision now fills kenzo tange’s imabari city auditorium in the ehime prefecture, japan with the ‘1000 color wave’. the famed auditorium is located in a city known for its leading textile dyeing industry, and paired with moureaux’s chromatic background, the imabari color show installation resulted in a dynamic color composition.

moureaux created 1000 hues specifically for the installation and colored each seat a different one. even though the same water, formula, and environment that are employed during the dyeing process, the slightest change in weather or temperacture can completely disrupt the result of the pigmentation. despite the intricate process, the skilled craftsmen of imabari created moureaux’s one thousand different nuances.

the bright color palette creates an astounding wave of colors, engaging in a dialogue with the undulating ceiling. each of the 1002 seats was covered with fabric that was dyed a different hue to create the installation. even though the auditorium’s performance on stage usually commands all the attention, the rainbow-clad seats steal the show.
