investigating the way in which a tree manages to draw water and minerals up its roots and through its grain, raw-edges thought to harness with the process as a means of pigmenting wood from within. to do so, the london-based studio of yael mer and shay alkalay soaked the natural material in vibrant colors to build up a grouping of vivid timbers which they have sculpted into complex patterned blocks — their three-dimensional shape distorting their graphic arrangement in a surprising and unexpected way.

the ‘endgrain’ collection brings forth furniture pieces such as a desk, mounted wall shelf, low tables and stools which express motifs that are derived from checkered textiles. the series of functional objects is being presented at senne, in a solo exhibition on the occasion of brussels design september 2014 in belgium.
