architecture & design studio facultative works has applied brightly colored elements to transform the interior of an optics store with an optometrist’s office, in st. petersburg, russia. the overall design aims to create a sense of sterility, but also to evoke a friendly atmosphere. all furniture, lighting, and retail equipment were created specifically for this project.

in the interior design by facultative works, the ceiling with built-in lighting, panels, shelves, and mirrors are joined together without gaps, forming a monolith capsule-like design. the circular luminaires on the ceiling were inspired by alvar aalto’s skylights and, when noticed, they seem to resemble optical lenses. however, the central and most prominent element of the space is a bright orange florarium, with plants taken from one of the oldest botanical gardens in russia.

the reception room is designed to remind of the interiors of russian public transport. the custom yellow doorknobs, along with the blue sofa create a vivid sense of a bus ride. in addition, a blue technical unit is built into the wall, consisting of various several parts: a niche for reusable shoe covers, interchangeable badges for doctor’s name, a charging panel, and a set of magazine shelves. meanwhile, a custom lamp above the optometrist’s room, designed as a miniature copy of the store shelves, signals whether the office is occupied or vacant.

in the doctor’s office, a special hygienic corner has been created, to include a table, mirror, napkin holder, and a sink, so that patients can easily and neatly take off / on their contact lenses. since some eye exams require complete darkness in the room, the doctor’s table incorporates an industrial-looking switch panel that controls all the lighting in the office, as well as in the reception room. furthermore, natural light can be toned down, by using a set of sliding curtains, made from the same bright blue material of medical screens.
