‘stitching concrete’ bench by florian schmid 120W x 37D x 47H cm concrete canvas 13 mm, polyamide string fiber

a chair and bench have been added to german designer florian schmid‘s ‘stitching concrete’ works which are constructed from a material called ‘concrete canvas‘ (CC).

each seating object is formed by folding the concrete canvas medium which is impregnated with cement when drenched in water. to create just the right forms and proportions, schmid first produced a number of rubber foam mock-ups to create patterns which were then transferred onto rolls of the fabric. following cutting and seaming, the substance is then sewn together to achieve the correct shape and volume. the furniture object is then hung on a wooden rack to create tension, and is watered, hardening and drying out completely within 24 hours. the ‘stitching concrete collection’ series of seating are ideal for both indoor and outdoor use as the material resists agains UV and chemicals, is fire proofed and water resistant.

florian schmid’s explorationg with concrete canvas first began with his ‘stitching concrete stools‘. these first works resulting from this process were presented during milan design week 2012 in an exhibition entitled ‘the threads that bind us’ at plusdesign gallery, and will remain on display until june 30th, 2012. florian schmid: stitching concrete chair + bench front view of the bench florian schmid: stitching concrete chair + bench 3/4 view
