‘lento’ – fly on the wall smoke alarm by paola suhonen for jalo helsinki188 x 184 x 50 mm

who says safety can’t be fun?

finnish designer paola suhonen‘s ‘lento’ fly on the wall photoelectric smoke alarm not only brings added security to your home, it also provides an entertaining alternative to the boring and unattractive options which are on the market. produced by jalo helsinki, the entire external casing of the ‘pesky insect’ acts as a press switch, silencing any false warnings, as well as for testing, eliminating any tiny buttons. without the need for any screws or a power drill, installation is also quick and simple with the use of 3M tape.

‘lento’ is exhibited in the ‘vous voulez rire?’ (on now until august 31st, 2013) show at site le corbusier de firminy which questions whether design is taking itself too seriously. sometimes humour may seem to abstract the ultimate function of something, however, curator benjamin girardproves that it can be considered equally important as other features, by presenting a range of lighthearted objects which bring a smile to your face, but also have purpose. the show is an off-site program of the 2013 saint-etienne biennale.
