stockholm furniture fair 2018: copenhagen-based norm architects has revised the design of a traditional wingback chair to create a piece that opens up as much as it closes you in. created for stockholm brand fogia, enclosed comprises of two upholstered shells resting on a wooden basemillimetres apart to form a funnel-like composition that welcomes its user. the piece forms part of the brand’s latest collection launched during the city’s annual design week.

norm architects looks to nature for the revision of this 17th century archetype, presenting a form inspired by the flower petals. made up of smooth wooden curves, the separate elements fold in to embrace leather cushions secured using a velcro fastening. the design expresses mutual concerns over sustainability and environmental issues allowing users to upholster only the individual elements when necessary.

by breaking down the different elements of the chair it gave us the opportunity to play around with different textiles and tactilities which you can see with the different versions of upholstery’, designer and founder of norm architects, jonas bjerre-poulsen explains. ‘the chair encloses the body…for a private corner or in public places where you wish to create a space within a space, with some kind of privacy‘.

enclosed is one of two new collaborations within a series of new pieces launched by fogia during stockholm design fair. this year the furniture brand worked with their collaborators to design against obsolescence and focus on sustianability, in a bid to enlighten the consumer. options for soft textiles or leather are available.

among the 14 products included in fogia’s 2018 collection is also a curved armchair by luca nichetto, a set of ceramic dishes by note design studio and a new version of andreas engesvik’s bollo chair.
