‘bamboo lights’ by formistry

singapore-based studio formistry has recently broken onto the design scene with three lighting objects, ‘bamboo light’, ‘buttom lamp’ and ‘rattan lamp’, each of which explores the potential of the diverse materials from which they are made.  

the lamps were on display shown at ‘platform’ – the young talent zone at the international furniture fair singapore (IFFS) 2012.

a combination of bamboo, rice and glass, the electronically powered portable table lamp can stand alone or be displayed in a cluster. to soften the light from the bulb within, glass and rice diffusers are set onto the bamboo body. the object measures 8 cm in diameter with a height of 12 cm (3 x 4.7 inches).

resin buttons, a common off-the-shelf fastener, is layered to create the design. after being carefully selected, the buttons are assembled to allow different intensities of light through. the pendant can be easily built using a template and a few simple tools, making it ideal for the purpose of creating job opportunities for non-profit organizations and community aid services. overall, the lamp is 55 cm in diameter and 18 cm in height (22 x 7 inches).

woven rattan, a readily available material in asia, is explored as a pendant light. the inherent flexibility and warm color of the medium translates into simple curves and clean lines on the lighting object. overall, the form measures 80 x 20 x 20 cm (32 x 8 x 8 inches).

international furniture fair singapore / ASEAN furniture show (IFFS/AFS) the international furniture fair singapore, held in conjunction with the ASEAN furniture show (IFFS/AFS), began in 1981 and has since come to be regarded by industry experts as asia’s most prestigious furniture trade show. IFFS/AFS provides an effective marketing platform for regional companies to venture into the global market. as a testimony to the quality of the show, IFFS/AFS is the first asian-based international furniture fair to be accepted as a member of the elite union des foires internationales, a paris-based international authority on trade fairs. in addition, it is the only furniture trade event in singapore to be awarded the ‘approved international fair’ status by the singapore tourism board. IFFS/AFS is set to become even more comprehensive for the furniture players, with the addition of the inaugural deco asia and hospitality asia developed to expand the scope of the show.
