danish furniture house fredericia and british creator jasper morrison collaborate to form their approaches and views on scandinavian design traditions through three sets of household fittings – the ‘taro’ dining table, ‘pon’ multifunctional tables and ‘kile’ sofa. the series was a main feature for fredericia at the 2016 stockholm furniture fair.

‘fredericia embraces many designers with various perspectives, but jasper morrison’s design appeals in particular to our inherited understanding of good design,’ explains owner and design director at fredericia, thomas graversen. ‘at the same time, he is one of the most forward-thinking of contemporary designers. on several occasions, morrison has successfully developed what have come to be heralded as modern archetypes, all without undue aesthetic noise. therefore, we are obviously thrilled to have entered into close cooperation with morrison, and it will undoubtedly influence the future development of the company.’

 kile sofa

a sofa completely new dimensions, but with the same square legs which can be found on børge mogensen’s iconic leather sofas and wing chair. stringently shaped with an almost one-piece straight back and angled armrest, which in addition to conveying elegance, ensures extra comfort for the user.

‘fredericia and børge mogensen were late but important discoveries for me,’ says jasper morrison. ‘mogensen, I now realise, is the quintessential danish designer, capable of creating understated and beautifully proportioned furniture for living the good life – super normal before the term existed. he’s become something of a hero for me, and I’m very proud to be working for ‘his’ company.’

jasper morrison has allowed the ends of the sofa to open out slightly to make it more welcoming.  the ’kile’ is built on a solid wood frame and upholstered in cold cured foam. a hard wearing combination that makes it resistant to daily use and wear.

pon multifunctional tables

the ‘pon’ collection is a series of side tables in varying sizes made of ash or oak. morrison continued wit the straightforward themes with no decoration or superfluous details, just tables which can stand alone or in groups, either with other tables of the same size or different.

modest in size, each are large enough for a book, a glass or a tray. the largest in the series is the circular sofa table with a diameter of 90 cm.

taro dining table

throughout frederica’s long history, wood has been worked in great detail and is always the main center piece of the company’s furniture production. as a result, jasper morrison proposed designing a dinning table in solid, knotless oak.

the danish company wanted to produce a solid wood dinning table with a minimum of wastage using valuable prime-grade oak. the tree is often more than 150 years old when felled and there was a wish on both sides to take a responsible approach to the way in which the table should be produced. the dining table has been designed in three sizes to meet the needs of different rooms and daily functionality.
