on the occasion of SALON: art + design in new york (november 13-16, 2015), friedman benda presents ‘artisanal’, an elaborate living room installation realized by humberto and fernando campana. the collection of furniture pieces marks a new period of creativity for the brazilian designers, which sees them re-imagining the innovative way in which they have explored traditional craft techniques in their creative practice. the ‘pirarucu’ sofa, ‘detonado’ modular book shelf, ‘ofidia’ side table and ‘bolatas’ armchairs and sofas are fully developed with a focus on refined materials and skilled craftsmanship, resulting in imaginative, livable, functional works which surprise.

curvilinear in form, the ‘pirarucu’ sofa is made with the tanned skins of one of the world’s largest fresh-water fish found in the amazon. the rich and naturally patterned skins are applied to the seating by french artisans, and their textural surfaces are complemented by a vertical bamboo structure that forms the back and sides of ‘pirarucu’.

creating a dialogue between european and brazilian modernist design, the geometric units of the ‘detonado’ modular bookshelf are constructed with freijó wood frames, finished with patchworks of reclaimed wicker taken from old thonet chairs.

‘ofidia’ sees the process of bronze being cast into a slithering serpent that twists itself into a side table, in a primitive but dynamic way.
