NOT A HOTEL scales up the poké ball into fully inhabitable hotel in japan

the project brings the world of pokémon into the built environment through a compact retreat shaped around sleep.

CATCHING SOME SLEEP, QUITE LITERALLY

Pokémon Sleep and Japanese hospitality brand NOT A HOTEL are translating one of gaming’s most recognizable objects into inhabitable architecture. Appearing amid the natural landscape of Hokkaido, the Poké Ball-Themed Hotel turns the familiar red-and-white sphere into a place where people can actually spend the night — a rather literal invitation to catch some sleep.

The collaboration borrows its premise from the fictional universe, where Poké Balls are conceived as comfortable places for Pokémon to rest. Here, the scale shifts from pocket-sized device to human retreat, with architecture and technology used to create an environment centered on calm, comfort, and a good night’s sleep. The idea also neatly extends the logic of Pokémon Sleep, the mobile game that tracks rest and rewards players for developing healthier sleeping habits.

A POKÉ BALL LANDS IN HOKKAIDO

The Poké Ball-Themed Hotel will not operate as a conventional property with rooms available through a booking platform. Instead, stays will be offered through a limited campaign, giving selected participants the opportunity to experience the one-off structure.

The project sits comfortably within NOT A HOTEL’s broader approach to hospitality, which brings together design-led architecture, digital technology, and highly controlled stays. Founded in Japan in 2020, the company develops a network of distinctive residences by architects and creators, combining private ownership with hotel services and shared access across its properties. The Poké Ball may be its most pop-cultural experiment yet, but the conversion of an instantly recognizable image into a fully operational retreat follows the same appetite for architecture as experience.
