tree trunks and yew roots become legs and backrests in gidoo songs' furniture series

gidoo song bridges nature and architecture

Gidoo Song’s Connect Series presents a collection of furniture rooted in the designer’s personal relationships, and the relationship between nature and artificiality. Song draws on childhood memories of watching his father trimming trees and collecting uniquely shaped stones, which he unites with architectural formative principles to create furniture that is sculptural and functional. The chairs and stools are carved out of cherry and oak wood, embracing minimalist geometric forms imposed with natural objects from Song’s father’s collection which here find new expressions as armrests, backrests, and legs.

The legs, with edges left exposed to embrace the essence of the materiality, stand like columns and architectural walls, connected with seats shaped from both curved and straight lines using traditional weaving. ‘What is interesting is that while my father found beauty in its natural form, I found it by artificially processing natural materials, says Gidoo Song.

The Connect Series is, as such, a formative and functional variation of generational stories and the relationship between humans and nature. When viewed from above, the chairs and stools’ three-dimensional legs and stalls look like a two-dimensional architectural floor plan. For the designer, nature on the floor plan of architecture evokes a sense of heterogeneity in itself.
