gilli kuchik: industrial upholstery

‘industrial upholstery’ by israeli designer gilli kuchik from bakery studio is a project that explores different means of upholstering furniture. according to kuchik, during the research stage of her project, it was apparent that upholstery as a discipline had remained fairly stagnant through out its history. here ‘industrial upholstery’ uses fabric as the mold for the construction. two kinds of polyurethane are injected into the fabric, hi-density polyurethane for construction and polyurethane foam for comfort.

kuchik believes in hands on experimentation with materials and technologies and that in order to achieve new discoveries, you have to surrender to an unknown journey. for her, materials are perfect partners for this journey because they add an element of surprise. sometimes the material responds to the designer wishes and sometime the designer responds to the materials wishes.
