on january 24, 2005 giovanni sacchi died at age of 81. at the age of 12 he apprenticed to make wooden models for metal foundries. in sacchi’s atelier during 50 working years almost 500 designers passed by. sacchi built almost 20.000 design models (the lamp ‘tizio’ designed by richard sapper, the ‘dry’ cutlery by achille castiglioni…) and 8.000 architectural plastics (the ‘strehler’ theatre in milan by marco zanuso, the ‘musee d’orsay’ in paris by gae aulenti…). these models assisted the architects / designers in refining their ideas and in working through practical problems with engineers. sacchi himself ended up participating in the design process. his workshop in via sirtori in milan closed in 2000.
