GreenPee has developed a sustainable, circular urinal to combat ‘wild peeing’ in amsterdam. by combining the urinal with a planter, the public toilet collects urine in a container that can be filled with either odor absorbing hemp fibers or an organic ammoniac blocker that after processing or composting, results in a phosphate-rich organic fertilizer.

made of durable stainless steel, the GreenPee is available in two models — the GreenPee single and the GreenPee duo. environmentally-friendly, the container doesn’t need to be connected to the water or sewage system, meaning less pollution. actually, it is equipped with a practical in-hydro system with a 30-liter reservoir that collects rainwater. this ensures that the plants on top only need to be watered sparingly, even during the dry season.

once the GreenPee tank is full, it can be emptied by connecting a hose to a tap after which the urine can be processed into clean water and fertilizer. this resulting product can be delivered to companies in charge of municipal green areas, urban farming and roof gardens. to check if the container is full, users can check the levels manually or install a smart level sensor that can send a text message when the tank is full.

after installing 12 GreenPee urinals in amsterdam, richard de vries, founder of the company, said that there was a 50% reduction in ‘wild peeing’, aiding in the conservation of historical buildings and in keeping the city clean. on the other hand, the planters have attracted bees and other insects.
