An acoustic guitar usually depends on a thin wooden body to turn the vibration of its strings into a larger movement of air. BeBeau Builds starts with a more stubborn material. For his latest experiment, the maker replaces the familiar timber shell with a faceted body assembled from 18 pieces of slate, producing a guitar that weighs 48.7 pounds and still functions as an acoustic instrument.

The idea begins with sound. Struck on its own, the thick slate gives off a long metallic ring, enough to suggest that the stone could resonate once shaped into a hollow body. Its physical behavior creates the harder part of the project. The slabs are heavy and vary in thickness, while the guitar still has to sit across a human body and hold the tension of its strings.

turning flat stone into a hollow instrument

Creator BeBeau Builds develops several body shapes before settling on the final angular form, then uses 3D-printed templates to transfer those geometries onto the slate. A tile saw struggles almost immediately with the inch-thick material. Once the pieces are cut, their beveled edges have to meet precisely enough to create a closed volume around a repurposed acoustic-guitar neck.

The first assembly exposes how quickly tiny differences can accumulate. A 3D-printed internal frame is designed to position the 18 stone sections, yet the slate ranges from roughly three quarters of an inch to an inch and a quarter thick. Those shifts throw the cut angles off. The pieces drift farther from the intended geometry as the body grows, forcing BeBeau Builds to pull the assembly apart and scrape the adhesive from the stone.

For the second attempt, BeBeau Builds works from the exterior dimensions instead of relying on the internal frame. Hot glue holds the pieces in position as a temporary structure, while construction adhesive fills the irregular joints and cures over several days. The method leaves room for the slate to behave like slate, with each piece adjusted against the next instead of being forced onto an idealized digital skeleton.

The front plate and salvaged neck bring the object closer to an instrument, though the material keeps making its presence felt. A stone panel breaks during fabrication and is replaced. Gaps between the sections are filled, and a coating of mineral oil darkens the slate before the strings are tuned. By this point the guitar has the familiar proportions of an acoustic body, translated into a much heavier shell of hard planar surfaces.

Once strummed, the biggest surprise is how ordinary the guitar sounds. BeBeau Builds expected the stone body to shift its voice dramatically, yet the first open chords land close to those of a conventional wooden acoustic. The slate version is softer and its notes fade sooner. Its tone changes slightly as well, while the inch-thick front plate still vibrates enough to move air and produce a recognizable acoustic sound.

Its physical limits are easier to hear and feel after a longer song. Nearly 49 pounds of slate becomes uncomfortable across the lap, and the neck sits at an imperfect angle, making the strings harder to press and pulling some notes sharp. Still, the project gets past its central question. A guitar body can become a stone shell and continue to behave like a guitar, with the biggest transformation arriving through weight and construction instead of an entirely unfamiliar voice.
