H. MOSER & CIE. HAS COATED THE WHOLE CHRONOWATCH IN VANTABLACK®

On the occasion of Watches & Wonders 2022, H. Moser & Cie. presents its Streamliner chronograph in a Blacker than Black version. The intriguing creation aims to push the boundaries of Vantablack® — a super-black coating with total hemispherical reflectances below 1.5% in the visible spectrum — in watchmaking as well as in other industries.

This is not the first time the watchmakers use Vantablack®, but it is a first for them to apply it to an entire chronograph.

AGAINST MORE VANTABLACK®, AN INFINITE BLACK HOLE EFFECT MAKES THE WATCH SEEM TO DISAPPEAR

Known for its constant innovation, H. Moser & Cie. has been working with Vantablack® in the past, releasing models with a black dial. Its newest experiment test the limits of this material by appliying it to the entire Streamliner Chronograph Flyback Automatic to create a timepiece dubbed Blacker than Black.

All throughout, the watch is covered with the blackest substance ever produced artificially, from its dial to its case, right down to its integrated bracelet. At Watches & Wonders, the watch was displayed on a stand also covered in Vantablack®, creating an infinite black hole effect where the watch seemed to disappear. To make this effect even stronger, the fluid lines and bold personality of the watch were erased, leaving only the essentials.

Composed of carbon nanostructures and absorbing 99.965% of light, Vantablack® is an extremely sensitive and delicate substance to handle. This unique piece is still too fragile to be worn on the wrist, but H. Moser & Cie. is studying different approaches for the future to strengthen the structure of Vantablack® to make it sufficiently shock-resistant.
