In a rapidly evolving landscape where AI-generated creations are becoming increasingly pertinent, I Am Not a Robot by Jaro Kose showcases the importance and essence of the human touch, and the craftsmanship, playfulness, unpredictability, and creativity that they can imbue to the design process. The lamp collection is crafted from recycled PLA filament, which is manually bent and welded with a heat mechanism similar to that used in 3D printers, resulting in one-of-a-kind structures that explore the distinction between robotic and human agency in product creation. In doing so, the designer demonstrates how human values are indispensable to the design process and cannot be generated by AI or replicated by machines.

As the realm of AI-generated design continue to rise, discourse surrounding the future of creativity and the role that humans will play in shaping design are prevalent. As a product designer, Jaro Kose has been exploring ways to emphasize the irreplaceable attributes that humans can bring to the design process, proving that as a designer, ‘I Am Not a Robot’. The lamps, which were realized in Kose’s studio in Amsterdam, embody the human that distinguish human-like designs, serving as a reminder that technology can merely assist in the design process. ‘By embracing the qualities that make us human, I wanted to show that creativity and design are still very much in the hands of humans and that the future of design is bright with possibility,’ notes Kose.
