hiroaki suzuki: dodecahedronic chair

‘dodecahedronic chair’ by hiroaki suzuki

japanese design student hiroaki suzuki has been researching functional applications for polyhedral geometry in product design. the result is his ‘dodecahedronic chair’. for the design, suzuki carefully calculated each angle with 3D CAD software, verifying the overall structural strength and stability of the chair by producing models made of paper and corrugated cardboard. though the seat looks rigid with its numerous hard planes, edges and vertexes, this is not telling of the comfort it brings to the sitter.

  • Beautiful

  • good idea, well executed

Vitra should scoop this up and put into production immediately!

  • This chair is also based on a dodecahedron. It´s called Hedronics: http://anotherarchitect.net/portfolio/next-moscow-interactive-installation/

  • Is it a toilet?

    Niels B. says:
  • wow, it has beautiful views from every angle! cool!
and whats wrong to be toilet or washbasin? it also cool 😉

    Ai says:
  • These designs were done much better by a fellow in West Los Angeles in 1990\’s, but i cant remember his name. I dont consider this chair usable though the visual is interesting. Whats that hole for? Fear something is going to crawl up and bite me.

    charles says:
  • Whats the problem in the “hole”???? Don’t much of the chairs you sit on, only support upper torso??? It’s only a matter of styling. Anyway i must agree with ”noona”, not easy to clean! Anyway it looks good, our congratulations Suzuki

  • Very good craftsmenship – womenship???
Good to see dodecahedron is alive and well.
I once had a project that had six sides as the base for the home with a twelve sided roof.
Very nice relationships with the geometry.
