situated in hong kong’s western district – a heritage rich area renown for its lovable bustle of aromatic markets and cafes – rises the newly completed ‘bohemian house’ complex. the high-rise is the latest project of the bohemian collection pioneered by cultural entrepreneur adrian cheng, executive vice-chairman and general manager of new world development, and is tailor-made for urban artisans and bohemians alike, epitomizing its brand spirit of ‘the artisanal movement’.

seemingly fitting its unique neighborhood and local cacophony of people, the ‘bohemian house’ focuses its design on the craftsmanship and manifests of the district’s food culture. new world development’s adrian cheng invited simplicity co., ltd to help define the artisanal living of the philosophically sophisticated new generations and infuse this distinctive food culture within. the multi-disciplinary studio who specialize in restaurant design, has created the ‘club bohemian’ as a kitchen characterized by simplicity – as the creative’s name should suggest – rather than conventional luxury.

the design of the artisan kitchen sources the immersive craft of its community and ensures its core centers on the food and cooking. as guests ascend from the connecting lobby to the club house, the lift displays sophisticated and beautifully shaped food utensils as if a dedicated museum. inside, an expanse of coppers particularly define its interior finish for the ornamental and functional purpose. with an artisan kitchen and alfresco cooking, the spaces are designed for residents to create hand-crafted dishes with locally sourced ingredients, nurture culinary skills, and facilitate the exchange of knowledge, traditions and relationships with one another.

further creating a community of urban bohemians through a focus on food culture, simplicity transforms the living space to adopt aesthetics derived from japan’s long-standing heritage of traditions. the walls of ‘club bohemian’ are partly made of resin, sand, stone and cork to reflect an atmosphere that depicts the beauty of nature, as well as conveying a sense of familiarity and warmth through the handwork of local artisans. furthermore, steeped in gentle light and various shades of green, this fixation on natural materials and details ensure that over time, these elements will mature and become increasingly textured.

crafted with as much expressive care, depth of knowledge and distinctive quality as the artisanal food within the hong kong district, the ‘club bohemian’ within the ‘bohemian house’ high-rise stays true to the development’s project and delivers a space that expresses and facilitates urban artisans. this is thanks to the vision of simplicity, who, with previous work of designing interior, products and graphic projects around the world, combine a perfect balance of modern sensibility with cultural traditions.
