hongik university industrial design online degree show 2021
the metaverse, self-driving vehicles, mixed reality, IoT and big data: there are no doubts that smart technologies are increasingly embedding, connecting and benefiting our lives already. the creative students at hongik university industrial design department, though, are envisioning an even brighter near-future for product, mobility and spatial design in the online degree show 2021. the exhibition, opened digitally on november 11, displays 95 student projects. each design approaches the theme of ‘any wise-sustainable and singular wisdom of appropriate level’, which aims to emphasize smart, intellectual value in the COVID-19 era.

hee-soo kim and jae-yeon kim – sitt
meaning ‘showroom in travel time’, sitt by students hee-soo kim and jae-yeon kim is an autonomous showroom service where users can sit in eight homely, interior settings: artsy, industrial, minimal, vintage, oriental, office, plantery and luxury. as mobility moves away from being used solely for transportation, the concept enriches the experience by enabling riders to book this furniture via a companion app. users are also able to personalize light, temperature, scent, drink and music. with pick-up services, sitt delivers an experience that enhances the pleasure when traveling.

kyeong-eon kim – SMTATION
SMTATION by kyeong-eon kim is a dessert store of SM entertainment that takes the dining experience to higher heights. by evaluating the south korean company’s values, the students’ project extends pleasure to various customers in a wide range of mediums. the space has been designed for people to cross multi-dimensional boundaries, from the real world to a fictional universe of the brand. a train station welcomes visitors before they travel inter-dimensionally, with the design split into two contrasting moods – futuristic and classic.

ju-hee park – com.odo
with com.odo, ju-hee park plays on the childhood obsession to build rooms, spaces, forts. today, in the COVID-19 era, the importance of individual space inside our homes has grown, as it has become a place to rest as well as socialize and work. com.odo aims to create a more personalized area using a secret desk, drawers and chair. the furniture can be manipulated by the user, interpreting the objects as building blocks, and creating a product for various purposes. for example, both the drawer and chair can be pulled out and turned over to uncover hidden space beneath the desk.

kwang-seuk go and hye-won kim – VOCO
VOCO by kwang-seuk go and hye-won kim is a near-future electric motorcycle that enables autonomous driving. after dropping off the rider at the destination, the motorbike drives to the parking lot and self-charges itself. the two-wheeler can then return to pick up the rider with an accompanying app. with a simple form composed of straight lines and delicate curves, VOCO’s design is optimized for the smart urban lifestyle as accessories and straps can easily be added to provide additional storage, functionality and character.

woong-ki song – nature sink
in the age of technology, student woong-ki song recognizes the need for humans to experience the natural environment more. nature sink is an ecosystem-like concept placed in a city center, where inhabitants can visit, pause and relax away from the urban life. the design harmonizes architectural elements with natural objects, creating an environment that feels natural to human senses. visitors walk through the space as if gradually sinking into the ground, relaxing outdoors and resting in a garden-like room.

ha-yeon yoo and ye-jin kim – vers
ha-yeon yoo and ye-jin kim design a controller set, vers, for the metaverse. created specifically for the alpha generation, the new game controllers are tailored for the dynamism needed for those engaging in the enormous, ever-expanding world digitally. the composition of controllers, pads, camera console and controller box enables flexible use between the real and virtual world when in the metaverse. the hub – the controller box – is designed subtly to fit harmoniously within home interiors. the controller and pads are designed ergonomically and modularly to deliver precise responses as well as a better gaming experience.

so-jeong ko – NUROX
the growth of e-commerce may have improve convenience, but it has heightened the severe garbage pandemic as well as traffic congestion and pollution. NUROX by so-jeong ko is a holistic logistic mobilities system that aims to create a sustainable infrastructure and mobility ecosystem. the intelligent, autonomous vehicle is designed to fit stylistically into a futuristic, sustainable urban environment. products are safely delivered using smart baskets that are retrieved and collected. the baskets are actually made of reused plastic parcel bags to clean-up environments.

dong-kyeong kim – DRAGGG
DRAGGG by dong-kyeong kim is a showroom that literally communicates the brand identity of JW anderson. the logo of the brand, an anchor, is dropped and dragged within the store as visitors enter. they feel the inertia as if onboard the ship and feeling the anchor tracing the ocean floor. the layout of the showroom follows these marks as if physically part of the brand experience. JWA’s clothing are then exhibited on spring-shaped hangers symbolizing this inertia.

seo-hee hong and soo-jin chae – POP+ALE
by seo-hee hong and soo-jin chae, POP + ALE is a set of sensory, amusing modules that enriches the experience of cocktail bars and making. the stimulating objects activate the bartenders’ senses of vision, smell and touch whilst imagining the taste of the drink they are about to create. comprising a set of utensils, each design evokes the characteristics of sweetness, acidity, bitterness and fat as they have different shapes and colors.

min-ji park – harmony
harmony by min-ji park has a unique form that aims to solve current safety and portability issues of electric scooters. legs extend from the standing pad to project guiding lights that alert the rider to dangerous situations ahead. cameras and sensors also provide additional in-ride alerts and navigation. the design’s structure and two legs ensure storage is easy, as its vertical stand means its footprint is small for holding and charging, which is wireless thanks to a pad.
