julius nobling, max van der mars & ellinor fast have developed a set of protective gear, offering protection against COVID-19 transmission, along with style. the designers have decided to focus on young millennials, since they were the main group that did not seem to take the early health regulations seriously. as more countries are now slowly going back to normal, and it seems unclear how the young generations will respond to the post-pandemic world, this project aims to make being safe and avoiding the spread of the virus cool.

nobling, van der mars & fast have created a set of three garments: a hoodie with built-in face mask, a sneeze sleeve, and a face shield, ‘designed to be both protective and look dope‘. the hoodie has a sewn-in face mask, that is removable for easy washing, a sleeve pocket to store napkins or alco-gel, and a glove that is attached to the hoodie pocket with velcro. the easily accessible glove makes it possible for the user to open doors, use keypads, hold on to the handrail on the subway, etc, without ever having to touch a possible contaminated area. the sneeze sleeve functions as an extra protective for the people in the user’s surroundings, as well as a reminder to sneeze into their elbow and not in the open air or into their hands.

the sleeve is big, chunky, and makes it easy for the user to submerge their face in. it also works as a statement, signaling to the people in the nearby that the user cares about their well-being. the face mask attached to the hoodie and the sneeze sleeve protects other people, however it does not directly protect the user. in order to also produce an accessory that directly protects the user, the designers have included a face shield as the thrid piece of their project, that combines the protectiveness of a mask with a similar ‘coolness-factor‘ as a pair of sunglasses. with the strong yellow tint, it brightens the users’ view and makes them stand out from the crowd. the face shield is attached to a plastic hinge, making it possible to lift the face shield and turn it into a sun cap.
