HTC and selfridges have collaborated in the installation of a public skateboarding arena in central london. the 18,500 square foot pop-up is the largest in the UK and features free skating alongside events curated by some of the industry’s largest brands and magazines. located within the old selfridges hotel, prime and fire – and sports specialists factory media – have transformed the space into a fully functional skatepark.

one area of the covered arena references london’s streets, citing recognizable locations with names such as big ben road gap, southbank ‘bank to wall’ and moorgate handrail. the inner section is a nod to the selfridges shop floor with obstacles based on shoeboxes, magazines and baseball caps. attendees will be able to create their own shared photography via four demo areas around the venue, each of which will be linked to large plasma screens.

‘due to it’s progressive nature, skating has inadvertently become and key influence in street style and fashion over the last four decades, but is rarely influenced by it. skateboarding carries with it a lifestyle that is equally at home in a purpose built west end skatepark as it is in the urban back streets of the world’s greatest city,’ explained phil young, creative director of the project.

‘at HTC we have an obsessive focus on delivering beautiful design that provides an integral role in daily life. working with selfridges we felt we were in a unique place to utilize our design credentials to help develop something new and authentic in central london – the HTC one skate park,’ commented peter frolund, vice president of the UK and nordics at HTC.

the ‘HTC one skatepark’ opens its doors to the public from march 27th – april 19th.
