the project shares similar characteristics with marcel duchamp's infamous 'fountain', as each experimental piece goes against the social norm and redefines the household side table.

presented in the exhibition design house, during são paulo design weekend 2014, humberto da mata‘s ‘fauna collection’ explores the aesthetic, functional and conceptual versions of the side table. at the core of the work is a reflection on how to transfigure the archetype of the table, proposing solutions that demonstrate its compositional potentials beyond the grouping of a horizontal surface and three or four feet. the research develops through speculation with unusual materials in the structuring of a furnishing and the transgression of standard forms with the use of objects that have nothing to do originally with the support function. ‘gathering possibilities within a concept that seeks the absence of prejudice and refuses to replicate some established formal values, we obtain an open set of objects, a range in which the number of parts does not influence its structure, a group of infinite possibilities,’ says da mata. these items include newspapers, pans, bottles, lamps, and other odd combinations that go against the common consensus of what a table should and shouldn’t be.
