16 iconic city monuments reimagined as backrests in CITYNG chair collection

savio firmino and cosimo de vita exhibit CITYNG, a collection of 16 chairs featuring some of the world’s iconic city monuments as backrests, at supersalone during milan design week 2021. the project evolves as an imaginary journey between west and east, between tradition and contemporaneity, in which each chair not only becomes a symbolic object of its dedicated city, but also symbolically represents its traditions and cultural legacy. in its entirety, the collection expresses the idea that different cultures and aesthetics can coexist in harmony around the same table.all images courtesy of savio firmino company

A MONUMENTAL CHAIR COLLECTION

sit on the city, in the city and with the city: savio firmino and cosimo de vita have transformed the chair into a symbolic, yet functional, object that encloses the city and its values. the CITYNG collection speaks of sharing and belonging, featuring a total of16 pieces handcrafted in solid wood. the journey starts in europe, from florence, the hometown of both cosimo de vita and the savio firmino company, continues to milan, the city of salone del mobile, and then to rome, paris, barcelona and, beyond the european borders, to moscow, petra, new york, agra, wuhan and many others. 

‘cityng is a journey between west and east, between tradition and modernity; the chairs are handcrafted in solid wood, but also decorated with a numerical control pantograph,’ notes cosimo de vita. ‘as regards the craftsmanship of the future, I strongly believe it will have to be able to combine the knowledge of the past with the technologies of the present, as well as humanity will have to find a balance between the celebration of national diversity and a necessary intercultural dialogue.’

savio firmino will be the first company to use blockchain in furniture and interior design. the florence-based company plans to be the first in the design sector to have a completely traced and certified production through the blockchain technology. as such, it will offer the perfect combination of manual production, craftsmanship (all the chairs are handcrafted in solid wood and decorated with a numerically controlled pantograph) and cutting-edge technologies. to celebrate this achievement, savio firmino is exhibiting CITYNG as a 4.0 craftsmanship project at supersalone during milan design week 2021.
