for the past two years, the design firm ideo has been working with the spanish bank BBVA to create a new design for the ubiquitous ATM banking machine. rather than approach the design from a feature perspective IDEO and BBVA worked to rethink the interaction from the human perspective. their research led them to design a machine that is turned 90 degrees from the surface on which it is mounted to give the user more privacy. the whole system is also now operated from a 19-inch touchscreen display that allows more intuitive control over the process. outside the screen, there is only a single slot for cash, statements and receipts with a card slot to keep the interface streamlined.  five of the new designs have been installed in spain with more to come.
