IDEO redesigns the ATM

for the past two years, the design firm ideo has been working with the spanish bank BBVA to create a new design for the ubiquitous ATM banking machine. rather than approach the design from a feature perspective IDEO and BBVA worked to rethink the interaction from the human perspective. their research led them to design a machine that is turned 90 degrees from the surface on which it is mounted to give the user more privacy. the whole system is also now operated from a 19-inch touchscreen display that allows more intuitive control over the process. outside the screen, there is only a single slot for cash, statements and receipts with a card slot to keep the interface streamlined.  five of the new designs have been installed in spain with more to come.

  • What a fantastic outdoor urinal!

    jimr says:
  • I would be worried that some punks could just jump on the thing, snap it off the wall and run away with the cash!! I want to see a section drawing.

    DES says:
  • IDEO should know better than illustrate the “human interaction” in the last photo – Most humans I know would line up on the left behind the user.

    youandme says:
  • a urinal with a ipad, hihihi:)

    11 says:
  • the background reminds me of compound eyes…perhaps it is suggestive that those who are desirous to have your personal identificative information would devise a wall made up of compound eyes which surveys every angle of a person as they are imputting their pin number and other secure information. identity theft…that is so awesome!!!
