hotelier michael bonner has implemented an unusual hospitality concept into reality, transforming a previously vacant warehouse in germany into a vintage faux-campsite. the 600 square-meter industrial space has been revamped into the basecamp bonn young hostel, a colorful indoor landscape playing host to 15 different restored caravans. each RV is thematically designed with familiar details, each adding to their charm and character: ‘hausboot’ has wooden oars and a life vest hung on its facade, appearing to be someone’s quirky floating residence, while ‘big ben’ accommodates a british flag and victorian-style seating outside. two historic U.S. airstreams — the iconic aluminum travelers — as well as two railway cars from deutsche bahn trains are furnished with retro accessories, and can shelter small student groups. guests to the hostel can vacation in one of the custom campers for as little as EUR 54 per night, with prices varying according to size and sleeping capacity. ideal for young adventurers, the eccentric habitat introduces atypical wit and style into a traditional lodging context.

  • Nina- I loved this article thanks for sharing!

    Lindsey Warneke says:
  • This is brilliant. I cannot believe how cool this is. We stayed at a place in Bisbee, AZ similar, but it was outside. I kind of like this! Very hipster and very vintage. I’m a vintage freak, even wrote a vintage novel I will share with my readers!

    tam francis says:
  • Very cool, but I’d like to see some pix of the interiors. Hopefully they are as creative as the exteriors.

    joanna says:
  • These are caravans, not RV’S.

    EASTWOOD says:
  • That’s branding at its best. I’d be curious to know the background story. It should be mentioned that an average bed in an European hostel costs 15 Euros so their prices are not cheap.

    Yuri says:
  • Love this campground!!! So fun

Jana @ 333 Days of Hand Lettering says:
  • Lovely project.
Maybe the idea of a hunting cabin in the middle of it must be rethought.
It,s needed not just to be executors but thinkers. What’s the beauty beneath some skins hanged? What culture does it brings? Is that the message planned for the project.
Sustainability and design stuff must walk together and both do not match killing processes for any reason.
    What’s your opinion folks?

    Sandro Pasquetti says:
  • Lindsey Warneke, what is the name of the place in Bisbee that you stayed? I live in AZ and would love to check it out! I am opening a hostel in Tempe and looking for good space is proving difficult. An outdoor RV-style hostel is perfect for a city filled with outdoor enthusiasts! I like the idea of being able to travel with a room too (Burning Man art car?!?!).
