chairs, benches, and mirrors inspired by classical stone ruins

Inspired by the Sanctuary of Athena, The Ruins of Delphi by Vincent Decat is a series of sculptural furniture pieces reimagining ancient Greece through a contemporary lens. Defined by an unfinished, deconstructed aesthetic, the collection features a chair, bench, and mirror rendered in striking cobalt blue.

The design draws directly from the fragmented ruins of the classical monument, a symbol of strength in Delphi for over a millennium. Each furniture piece mirrors the sanctuary’s partial and worn state — its unfinished beauty and structural elegance –- through solid wood construction, matte finishes, and subtle steel accents. The bold blue finish contrasts with the natural surfaces, inviting reflection on the coexistence of ancient and modern aesthetics.

vincent decat crafts enduring artifacts from wood

In particular, Vincent Decat’s material choices emphasize permanence, with solid wood and steel providing durability akin to the stone remnants of the sanctuary itself. Far from ephemeral, the series seeks to present enduring functional objects and sculptural artifacts, paying homage to the resilience of Greece’s architectural heritage.

The Ruins of Delphi series builds upon the Paris-based craft designer’s explorations of the relation between design and sculpture. the furniture objects balance the rationality of form and ergonomics, while the jagged edges inject a sense of spontaneity. Adopting an approach that blends the sculptural and the functional, Decat questions the conventions or interior and furniture design.
