as part of atlanta’s high museum of art‘s multi-year series of installations that activates the cultural institution’s slater sifly piazza, jaime hayon has erected ‘tiovivo’—a site-specific set of large-scale, wooden sculptures that transforms the public square into an artistic playground. the first major commission in the U.S. for the spanish creative, ‘tiovivo’ is comprised of four interactive structures that take on familiar shapes of animals or objects, such as a pig or a bell, that are adorned with whimsical patterns of polka dots and stripes rendered in vibrant colors, offering a sense of playfulness. each one is outfitted with a set of stairs or slides, and openings that are specifically sized for children, that encourage the museum’s young guests to climb in and engage with the installations.

‘tiovivo’ animates the piazza, turning the outdoor space into an art gallery, playground and summer refuge, setting an atmosphere of socialization and recreation. throughout the course of the warmer months, it will also become a stage for performances, art-making activities and special events co-organized with local partner institutions.

‘tiovivo’ is on show until november 27th, 2016.
