Jiwon Jung, a Korean furniture designer, uses Styrofoam, lacquer spray, and water transfer to make furniture using a hand-operated machine. The color is raised on the Styrofoam before naturally melting into the components of lacquer to show the pattern. ‘Styrofoam, a familiar material, and unfamiliar carbon method are combined to show pleasure in the work,’ shares the designer. The collection of four stools, titled KINOLD, pairs black with four other tones: mint, yellow, gray, and pink.

a four-step process driven by water transfer

As Jiwon Jung (see more here) explains, the texture of Styrofoam naturally melts as a component of lacquer spray, creating an unpredictable collide of patterns and colors for ar rich visual and tactile sensations. Furthermore, Styrofoam is light enough that anyone can lift it, making the process more enjoyable. The first step in shaping the KINOLD collection is to prepare the cut Styrofoam; next is choosing the desired color of the lacquer spray; once the color is chosen, Ji-won sprays the lacquer over the water to create a pattern. After a pattern is formed, he gently places the cut styrofoam into the water to coat it with lacquer. The final step is to allow the lacquered Styrofoam to dry naturally before finishing it several times with epoxy.
