the immediate audacity its materials is often secondary to the shape of the ‘half dollar / butterfly chair’. it reveals itself with an exposed substructure holding up the smooth skin of its outer layer. the chair is made from 1,500 half dollars with 7,000 welds made for support purposes. it measures 46″W x 32″D x 34″H and weighs 58 lbs.

constructed from 96 jars and more than 400 pieces of hardware, ‘jar chair’ takes the inherent preciousness of baby food jars and incorporates them into a piece of furniture. the common notion of ‘I’m not going to sit on glass’, offering both a secure and comfortable position, and a massaging nature. the chair stands at 14.5″W x 25.5″D x 40.5″H.

  • i think this piece of furniture is brilliant and it reflects a great deal of hard word and understanding but something i would want to know is why have u chosen the coins … you could have taken any other round flat product to explore the complexity and constrains.

  • Expensive furniture.

  • @spriha, why that would have made everything so much easier wouldn’t it? This chair isn’t just a piece of furniture made of flat metal disk welded together. It is also a work of art. Art is not just about the end result (the chair that you see), but rather it is a process of how the artist creates his piece. I don’t know where you’re from but all of these coins used for the ‘butterfly’ and ‘all the kings men’ chairs are American half dollar, which to my knowledge is not produced any longer. So either the artist had to accumulate them himself or acquired them from a collector. Also, since money is circulated each of these coins come from a different place, and now they have assembled at their final resting place into a wonderful work of art.
