the international garden festival, in collaboration with the musée de la civilisation of quebec city, renewed the installation ‘roof line garden II’ by canadian artists julia jamrozik and coryn kempster on the roof terrace of the museum for the summer of 2019. as a reinterpretation of line garden, a piece installed every year since 2014 on the site of the reford gardens in grand-métis, the roof line garden II of the museum offers the public a new outdoor space of enchantment and relaxation in new colors.

in addition to the roof line garden, the project ‘swing line garden’ also by both canadian artists, was installed in grand-métis for the 20th international garden festival. it is presented in the same colors as in quebec city, and visitors are invited to sway under the canopy on an array of swings.

barricade tape is a ubiquitous, man-made material, typically used to delineate a perimeter and keep people out. but in roof line garden II and swing line garden, it invites visitors in creating a playful and vibrant environment.

this year, the designers were inspired by the natural science-themed exhibitions at the museum and by the color contrasts of poisonous frogs hiding in the foliage of plants. in both nature and the installations, vibrant red tape peeks out of the green and yellow hues, creating pops of color throughout the piece. the light green canvas alludes to the rainforest and jungle sunlit leaves, as the scattered red reminds viewers of the venomous frogs and the darker side of the jungle. the installation’s colors reference two of the main exhibitions found at the musee de la civilisation, ‘venenum: a poisonous world’ and ‘curiosities of the natural world’.
