kanye west has announced that his latest yeezy sneaker will be made using algae as part of the brand’s move to sustainability. the rapper and fashion designer revealed a prototype pair of the shoes, as well as plans for the fashion brand to make its own foam using the plant-like organism.

west spoke onstage at day 3 of fast company’s innovation festival where he also stated that yeezy had moved its headquarters to cody, wyoming. he spoke of a 4,000-acre ranch explaining that it would eventually have have its own hydroponic farm.

‘we’re going to be farming and going seed to sole,’ said west, who spoke alongside yeezy head designer steven smith. together they unveiled the algae yeezy, which is still partially made from petroleum-based ethylene-vinyl acetate, or eva, and blended with foam made from harvested algae.
‘eco concerns are intersecting with what we do, and this is just the beginning of the future that kanye envisioned for us to start working on and creating and challenged us to,’ said smith. west also announced plans to return manufacturing to america within the next two years, the prototype shoe having been made in atlanta.

‘[we’re] getting into how we can have less impact with the dyes, because our color is a big signature of the brand, but also dyeing is one of the main things that’s impacting the planet in the fashion industry,’ said west. ‘so just being responsible from a to z in what happens.’
a credible source for adidas and yeezy news called ‘YEEZY MAFIA‘ has since released information on the algae shoe naming it the yeezy foam runner. they will be available for $75 in early 2020.
