‘kopperscape’ by karim rashid installed within the edmonton international airport, canada

five individual elements: a chair, chaise, lounge, bench and side table all integrated into one organic form make-up ‘kopperscape’. the installation, housed within the food court area of the US departures lounge at edmonton international airport in alberta, canada, was conceived by new york-based designer karim rashid. the sculptural work’s elements are made from fiberglass and painted in a metallic copper to symbolize the canadian copper penny. the bronze tone is also meant to imply regality and monumentalism, representing some of edmonton’s regional natural resources including oil, gas and minerals.

the form of the furniture landscape reflects that of the canadian one, the undulating surface referencing the country’s mountain range, snow swept peaks and flowing rivers. ‘kopperscape’ is an extension of 12 years of concepts rashid has created about ‘non-stop’ reconfigurable landscapes that become one large sculptural brushstroke.
